Equality Diversity and Inclusion Statement

Moth and Butterfly is dedicated to fostering an environment that champions equality, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) in all aspects of our work. We recognise that both storytelling and improvisation flourish when diverse voices and experiences are embraced, and we are committed to ensuring that everyone, irrespective of background, has the opportunity to participate in and enjoy our performances.

Our Commitments:

  1. Equal Opportunities: We provide equal opportunities for participation within our organiszation. Discrimination or harassment based on age, civil or family status, disability, gender, membership of the Traveller community, race, religion, sexual orientation, or socioeconomic status will not be tolerated, in alignment with the principles outlined in the Arts Council’s Equality, Human Rights & Diversity Policy. We also recognise and appreciate the intersectional nature of identity.
  2. Diverse Programming: We strive to showcase a wide range of stories and performances that reflect the rich tapestry of experience, cultures, traditions, and perspectives within all of us. This includes actively seeking storytellers and improvisors from underrepresented groups and ensuring our programming is inclusive and representative. Our approach is informed by the Arts Council’s Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Implementation Plan 2023–2028, which emphasises the importance of inclusivity in the arts.
  3. Accessible Performances: We are committed to making our events accessible to all individuals, including those with disabilities. This involves selecting accessible venues when possible, providing necessary accommodations, and continually seeking ways to improve the inclusivity of our performances. We utilize resources such as the Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Toolkit provided by the Arts Council to guide our efforts.
  4. Safe and Respectful Environment: We are committed to creating a safe and respectful environment for all performers, participants, crew, and audiences. To this end, we have adopted the Safe to Create Code of Behaviour, which outlines our dedication to dignity at work and in all our interactions.
  5. Ongoing Education and Training: We recognise that promoting EDI is an ongoing process. Therefore, we commit to continuous learning and development in this area, including providing training for our performers, guests, crew, and volunteers on EDI principles and practices. We will engage with training resources and toolkits available through the Arts Council and Safe to Create to enhance our understanding and implementation of best practices.
  6. Policy Development and Review: We have developed comprehensive policies that address dignity at work, bullying, harassment, and other relevant areas, drawing upon example policies provided by Safe to Create. These policies are regularly reviewed and updated to ensure they remain effective and aligned with current best practices.

Implementation and Review:

To ensure the effectiveness of our EDI initiatives, we will:

  • Develop an Action Plan: Create a detailed plan outlining specific actions, timelines, and responsibilities to advance our EDI objectives, guided by frameworks such as the Arts Council’s EDI Implementation Plan.
  • Monitor Progress: Regularly assess our progress against the action plan, making adjustments as necessary to address challenges and seize opportunities for improvement.
  • Report and Communicate: Share updates on our EDI efforts with committee members and stakeholders, fostering transparency and accountability.
  • Seek Feedback: Encourage input from our community, performers, audiences, staff, and participants to inform our EDI strategies and ensure they remain relevant and effective.

By embedding these commitments into our own organisational culture, Moth and Butterfly aims to create a welcoming and inclusive space where diverse stories, performances and voices can flourish, enriching the cultural landscape of Ireland, and beyond.
